The Passing of Our Friend Bill Berkley
With an arc that goes back more than 50 years, Mr. Berkley was always there to help NYU meet a moment of crisis or opportunity

The Berkley Institute for Civil Discourse and Civic Solutions joins our global NYU community in mourning the passing of William "Bill" Berkley. A 1966 alumnus of the NYU Stern School of Business, Mr. Berkley was chairman emeritus of NYU's Board of Trustees and a tireless champion of the University over much of his lifetime.
The Institute was endowed last year through a generous gift from the Berkley Family Foundation. Our mission of engaging students, scholars, and leaders with different perspectives to bridge the divisions tearing at our society was one close to Mr. Berkley's heart. His commitment to these ideals is reflected in the gentle guidance and unwavering support he and his son, William "Rob" Berkley, Jr., have provided to the Institute. Our warm connection with the Berkleys is a source of consolation for us amid the sadness we are experiencing in these difficult days.
The Institute will strive to honor Mr. Berkley's legacy by promoting robust civil discourse that addresses the biggest civic challenges facing our nation and world. To learn more about Bill's life, his accomplishments, and his extraordinary contributions to NYU, please visit NYU's website.
